June 23-29, 2014 – Jazz in the City: An Institute for Urban Ministry Leadership Training

(The Institute) will take place in New York City from June 23-29, 2014.  This Institute is an in-context learning experience that will offer graduate level credit and/or CEUs to a maximum of 5 NYTS students (there will be a maximum of 25 students in the June 2014 Institute) who feel called to and/or are passionate about urban ministry.

The Institute is a collaboration among representatives from three United Methodist seminaries:  Boston University School of Theology, Boston, MA; The Theological School at  Drew University, Madison, NJ;  and Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.; in partnership with the UMC Northeastern Jurisdiction Urban Steering Network and The Multi-Ethnic Center for Ministry and in consultation with the Center for the Study and Practice of Urban Religion (C-SPUR) of New York Theological Seminary; and Partners for Sacred Places (“The Urban Task Force”).

Students will be assigned to study 5 United Methodist urban local churches in New York City.  Using a case study model, teams of five students will spend 6 days with one of 5 diverse local United Methodist Churches serving as learners and consultants.  The churches are located in The Bronx, Upper Manhattan, Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

During the in-context, 6-day intensive Learning experience, students will reside in Alma Matthews House, a guest house/conference center located at 273-275 West 11th Street, New York, NY 10014
